The 90-day plan to your first 1,000 true subscribers
Not hacks — a schedule. Ninety days, three phases, and the unglamorous math of getting a thousand people who actually open.
Members-only playbook. Steal the calendar, not just the idea.
A thousand subscribers is the number where a newsletter stops being a hobby and starts being infrastructure — enough replies to steer by, enough opens to matter to a sponsor, enough people that a paid tier is real revenue. Here's the 90-day schedule, in three acts.
Days 1–30: Become findable
Growth doesn't start with promotion. It starts with a page worth landing on.
- Week 1: Rewrite your landing page around one sentence — who this is for and what they get. Cut every other claim.
- Week 2: Publish the two issues you'll be proud of in a year. These are your permanent sales team.
- Week 3: Set up the welcome sequence (see issue 04). New subscribers are conversion-critical — treat them like it.
- Week 4: Put the signup link everywhere you already are: bio, signature, pinned post, the end of every issue.
Days 31–60: Borrow audiences, honestly
You don't have distribution yet. Other people do — and the honest way to borrow it is to be useful in public.
- Write for the room you're in. Answer questions in communities you already belong to, with real answers. The link in your profile does the rest.
- Trade recommendations. Find five newsletters at your size. Recommend each other, genuinely, in a dedicated section. Cross-promotion between peers is the single highest-converting channel for small lists.
- One essay that travels. Write the definitive piece on your niche's most argued-about question. One great issue outperforms thirty decent ones.
Days 61–90: Turn readers into recruiters
- Ask, directly. "Know one person who'd love this? Forward it." Once per issue, no begging, no gimmicks. Forwards convert at absurd rates.
- Make sharing a feature. End each issue with the single most quotable line. Readers share sentences, not publications.
- Look at the numbers weekly. Which issues got forwarded? Which subject lines got opened? Do more of whatever the answer is.
The math nobody quotes
A thousand subscribers in 90 days is ~11 a day. That's one good comment section answer, one useful reply to a stranger's question, one shared issue — every day, without skipping. Unglamorous? Completely. But every list you admire was built exactly this way: compounding, unsexy consistency.
